Here is what the midnight sun is, when to experience it in Oulu, and how to make the most of the endless Arctic summer night.
What is the midnight sun?
In the far north, the tilt of the Earth means that around midsummer the sun does not fully set for a period of weeks. Instead of dropping below the horizon, it moves low across the sky through the night, bathing the landscape in a soft, continuous golden light.
Oulu sits far enough north to experience this. Around the summer solstice in June, the nights here never grow truly dark. Even at 1 or 2 in the morning, there is enough light to be outdoors, on the water, or watching the sky turn colours that normally only last a few minutes at sunset, except here they last for hours.
When can you see the midnight sun in Oulu?
Best period: from early June to early August, when the nights are at their brightest.
Peak: around the summer solstice, roughly 20–21 June, when daylight is at its absolute maximum.
Best time of night to experience it: late evening into the small hours, when the low sun casts the most dramatic golden light.
Unlike the northern lights, the midnight sun is completely reliable. It is not weather-dependent in the same way, though a clear evening makes the colours even more striking. If you are in Oulu in June or July, you will experience it.
The best way to experience it: on the water
You can enjoy the midnight sun from anywhere with an open view, but there is a reason paddling is the classic way to do it. On the calm, sheltered waters of the Oulu River Delta, the low sun reflects off the surface, the world falls silent, and the whole landscape glows. Gliding through it in a kayak, with no sound but your paddle, is one of the most peaceful experiences the Finnish summer offers.
Our Midnight Sun Kayaking tour takes small groups out into this exact moment. No previous experience is needed, the kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly, and your guide gives a full briefing before you set off. You just paddle into the golden night.
Other ways to enjoy the endless night
SUP under the midnight sun: stand-up paddleboarding gives you an even wider view of the glowing sky and calm water.
An evening cycle: the low light makes Nallikari's beaches and the historic island of Pikisaari beautiful late into the night.
Simply by the sea: the Nallikari shoreline is a perfect place to watch the sun hover over the Gulf of Bothnia.
Tips for making the most of it
Stay up late. The best light comes in the hours around midnight, so plan for a late evening rather than an early one.
Bring a layer. Even in summer, the small hours by the water can be cool.
Bring a camera. The prolonged golden light is a rare chance for photos you cannot take anywhere else.
Adjust your body clock. The constant light can make it hard to sleep. Embrace it, and rest during the day if you need to.
