Our rental shop sits right in front of Nallikari Beach, on the ground floor of the Aalto Hotel building, at the landing point of the Oulujoki delta paddling route. From the door you can be on the water, on the trail or on the sea ice within minutes, about 15 minutes from Oulu city centre.

Where to go from here?
From the rental shop you can paddle straight out to sea or into the Oulujoki river delta, taking the scenic Mustasalmi route or heading through the cultural landscapes of Toppilansalmi. Nallikari and Hietasaari also have maintained trails for fatbiking, and in winter the sea in front of the beach freezes into a wide open field of snow and ice you can snowshoe, cycle and fish across.

What equipment can I rent in Oulu?

Do I need to book in advance?
Booking online in advance is the safest way to get the equipment and the time you want, especially at weekends and during school holidays. Walk-ins are welcome when we have equipment free.
Can beginners rent equipment?
Yes. All of our rental equipment is suitable for beginners, and we give you instructions and fit the gear before you leave. If you have never used snowshoes or a fatbike before, tell us and we will walk you through it.
Are safety equipment and instructions included?
Yes. Helmets come with every fatbike and life jackets with every kayak, canoe and SUP board. You get safety instructions and current information on conditions before every rental.
Can I rent equipment without joining a guided tour?
Yes. All rental equipment is meant for self-guided outings. You choose your own route and pace. If you would rather have a guide, see our weekly program.
Can I rent winter clothing in Oulu?
Yes. A full thermal set includes a thermal overall, waterproof winter boots, gloves and a beanie, from €15 for 2 hours. It is the easiest way to stay out longer in an Oulu winter.
Can I rent a fatbike in Oulu?
Yes, all year round, from €27 for 2 hours. Fatbikes have wide, low-pressure tyres that roll over sand, snow and, when the ice is safe, the frozen sea.
Can I rent a kayak, canoe or SUP board in Oulu?
Yes, during the summer season. From our rental shop you can paddle straight out to sea or into the Oulujoki river delta.
Can groups rent equipment?
Yes. Group rentals are arranged in advance so we can reserve the right equipment, sizes and duration. Contact travel@nallikarisafaris.fi or see our group page.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Most rentals go ahead in normal Finnish weather, which is part of the experience. If conditions are genuinely unsafe, for example thin sea ice or a storm, we will tell you when you pick up the equipment and reschedule your booking at no extra cost.
Is Nallikari close to Oulu city centre?
Yes, about 15 minutes. Bus number 15 runs to Nallikari and there is plenty of free parking.
What are the best things to do in Oulu?
In winter: ice fishing, snowshoeing and fatbiking on the frozen sea, and watching the Northern Lights from the sea ice. In summer: kayaking and SUP boarding on the coast and the Oulujoki delta, and cycling through Nallikari and Hietasaari. You can do all of these with rental equipment on your own, or with a local guide.
