Your experience begins at our Nallikari Experience Center by the seaside, right in front of the Nallikari shoreline, where you can change into thermal clothing to keep you warm in Arctic conditions. From there, we step onto the frozen sea. Imagine – we’re standing on the frozen sea just next to the city of Oulu.
Together with your guide, you’ll take part in a traditional Finnish fishing method: a fish trap placed under the ice. We drill holes using an ice auger and then open the ice with an ice saw. Once the opening is ready, we lift the trap from beneath the frozen surface. Inside, you’ll often find a live catch of native fish species such as perch, roach, burbot, ide, or ruffe – all thriving in this unique environment.
The sea here is part of a rare water ecosystem where freshwater fish live in slightly salty seawater!
Some of the fish will be taken with us, while the rest are returned to the trap to attract more fish in the future. To finish the experience, we gather around an open fire on the ice and enjoy a freshly brewed traditional pot of coffee made over the flames – just as it’s always been done.
