1. It's far easier to reach
Oulu has its own airport just 15 kilometres from the city centre, with frequent domestic connections, and the Pendolino Plus train from Helsinki takes about 5.5 hours. From the moment you land, nature is only about 15 minutes away — no long transfers deep into the wilderness before your holiday can begin.
2. Nature is right next to the city
In Oulu you get both worlds in one trip: genuine Arctic nature and a vibrant, culturally rich city with restaurants, museums, markets and comfortable hotels. You can paddle a river delta or walk on the frozen sea in the morning, and be at a café or gallery in the afternoon. In Lapland's remote resorts, that balance is much harder to find.

Remote Lapland resorts, glass igloos and peak-season packages command premium prices. Oulu's experiences and accommodation are generally more accessible on the wallet, which means you can do more on the same budget.

Lapland's most famous spots can feel busy in high season. Oulu offers the same experiences in a calmer, less touristy setting — often with smaller groups and a more personal, local feel.
5. Availability when Lapland is sold out
This is the one that catches most people by surprise. Lapland books out months in advance for Christmas and New Year. Oulu, with its growing but far less saturated tourism scene, often still has availability during the busiest holiday weeks — including Christmas itself.
